Welcome to the inaugural Silmarillion Awards! The Silmarillion Awards highlight all of the wonderful elements from the best in fantasy fiction. These awards are not for authors or books, but for the characters, monsters, poetry, and weapons within them.
In honor of the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, this online awards event will recognize elements from ten categories (see below). These awards are both by fans of fantasy and for fans of fantasy. The awards will happen as follows:
Nomination Process: June 20-July 1
Voting for Awards: July 4-15
Presentation of the awards: July 16-28
Final Celebration: July 29
Nomination Rules
Nominations are made by entering a comment on the post for a particular award. The top five nominees for each award will move on to final voting. Nominations must be from a work of fantasy fiction. Other than that, here are the rules for making and endorsing nominations.
- An individual person may make as many nominations as they desire.
- Include the book name along with the name of your nomination, i.e. Legolas from The Lord of the Rings.
- Feel free to wax eloquent as to why you think your nomination/second deserves to win the award.
- Each nomination may be seconded by a single person one time.
- An individual may not second their own nomination, but may second as many other nominations as they wish.
- Characters and creatures and weapons must be from a work of fantasy fiction, but they cannot be from any of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work.
Award categories
This is the page to vote on for the Most Faithful Friend award. Write your nominations or second someone else’s nominations in the comments below.
Qualifications: The most faithful friend is someone who stands by his friends though all the world may be against them. He never gives up on them, never stops believing in them, never ceases to fight to protect them. His actions may seem small in the grand scale of the story, but when it comes to matters of the heart, none matter more than the words and deeds this character does in support of his friends.
The award will be presented by the character who is a dropper of eaves, a cooker of coneys, a tender of gardens. This person’s friends wouldn’t have gotten very far without him for he, more than any other character in Tolkien’s work perhaps, proved himself to be the most faithful friend.
After nominating or endorsing one or more faithful friends below, be sure to visit the other award pages and nominate your the entries you deem most worthy for the following categories.
Best Fantasy Mount
Best Riddling and Poetry
Best Redemption Story
Strangest Character
Best Fantasy Weapon
Most Epic Hero
Most Heartwrenching Death
Wisest Counseler
Most Nefarious Villain
Mae govannen (well met), and happy nominating!

I know exactly which character is presenting this award. 😉
I nominate Reepicheep from The Chronicles of Narnia.
Aw, I guess it was kind of obvious, wasn’t it?
Oh, and Reepicheep is awesome. Seconded!
Second
I second Reepicheep!
Aw, Reepicheep! I second him. 🙂
I second Reepicheep.
I second Reepicheep too!
Seconded. I love Reepicheep.
I third Reepicheep!
Ooh, Reepicheep! I second the little mouse warrior. ^_^
I second Reepicheep!
I’m going to nominate Hermione Granger from Harry Potter
I second this!
I third Hermione!
I fourth Hermione! Love her so much. <3
I fourth Hermione! Without her, Harry wouldn’t have gotten past the first book, lol.
I second Hermione!
And, because I can, I’m also nominating Ron Weasley from Harry Potter
lol – And I second this, too!
And I third Ron! Could Ron, Hermione, and Harry be considered one nomination? Since it was a three way friendship? (although, Ron had a little falling out, not once, but twice.)
I second Ron, as well! 🙂
Me too. 🙂
Second! (or sixth or whatever we’re up to)

I nominate Farid from the Inkheart trilogy…He has his faults, but he makes up for it in his loyalty to Dustfinger. 🙂
Awww, I was going to nominate him XD
I nominate Sticky Washington from the Mysterious Benedict Society. A small, fidgety boy who thinks he’s of no account but is valued by his friends.
Aww, I love him! I second it. 🙂
I’ll third it!
I would fourth Sticky, but… I don’t think Mysterious Benedict Society is fantasy. It’s in the real world with a touch of sci-fi technology like brainwashing and brain signals.
I nominate Horace from The Ranger’s Apprentice series 🙂
Ooo, I’ve heard great things about this series.
SECONDED! (Yay for another Ranger’s Apprentice fan!) Horace is such a steady friend, and he follows Will’s crazy plans unquestioningly.
Yes! I third! I love that series and I love Will and Horace’s dynamic, especially as time goes on.
I second Horace! 🙂
I forth this! (Was planning on nominating him.)
I fifth Horace! Like Tracey said, he’s such a steady friend. 🙂
I sixth Horace! Even though I didn’t love the Ranger’s Apprentice series (must of been, in part, the hype), Horace was a great friend… even though he had his mean moments in the beginning. 😛
I nominate:
Gonff the Mousethief from Mossflower by Brian Jacques — he and Martin are the best together!
And Ky from Orphan’s Song and Songkeeper by Gillian Bronte Adams — he’s so loyal and such a great friend. 🙂
I second Gonff!
Gonff!!! Yes! I third!
And I nominate Koji from The Threshold Series and Rose Red from Goldstone Wood (I can do that, right?)
Yes, nominate away!
I second Rose Red. She’s a faithful friend for sure!
I second Rose Red!
I second Rose Red from Goldstone!
I third Rose Red!
I second Rose Red. What a faithful girl. :’)
I second Rose Red!
I second Koji and Rose Red!
I second Rose Red!
I second Ky!
Nomination:
Keefe Sencen, Keeper of the Lost Cities series, by Shannon Messenger
I nominate Walter Foley from Bryan Davis’s Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Children of the Bard series. His unflagging loyalty and good humor got his friends through a lot of scrapes. (Plus he understates every epic thing he does. Running from dragonslayers or fighting demonic forces? Eh, just another day at the office. It’s hilarious.)
SECONDING WALTER!
I VERY MUCH THIRD WALTER.
He was the first person I thought of when I saw this category. He’s the type of best friend we all need.
I TOTALLY THIRD WALTER. Love that goofball. XD
Toli from The Dragon King Trilogy by Stephen R. Lawhead.
Oh yes! Definitely second Toli.
I nominate Brandi from the Blades of Acktar
I second! Brandi certainly is loyal.

I thought of another one! I nominate Iko from the Lunar Chronicles! 🙂
Oh, yes! SECOND. Iko’s so fun.
Love Iko. Third.
I nominate Jem Carstairs from the Infernal Devices series…

I nominate Greystripe from The Warriors series by Erin Hunter! (Maybe not exactly fantasy… but it’s all about talking cats who live in clans in the woods, so it is fantastical!)
I also nominate Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride by William Goldman for being such a wonderful friend to Fezzik.
Oh, Inigo. He was always my favorite when I was a kid…
I second Inigo! Forgot to say it in my comment 😛
I second Inigo!
I second Inigo!
I second Inigo
I second Inigo!
I nominate Grover from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. He was always there for Percy, and loyal to a fault.
I nominate Kyrin Altair and Holden from The Ilyon Chronicles by Jaye L. Knight.
I second both Kyrin and Holden. 😀
I second Kyrin and Holden.
i’d like to nominate Oskar N. Reteep from The Wingfeather Saga. He stuck by the Igibys in every circumstance, provided crucial contacts and bits of lore, spoke up when others needed kind admonishment, and maintained a cheerful and strengthening atmosphere of encouragement throughout the series. He wasn’t a capable fighter, and it was hard for him to keep up at times, but i don’t know what the Igibys would’ve done without him.
In the words of plenty of other participants above, “I second!”
I second Oscar!
Pardon me, OsKar.
*tries to come up with a clever answer to say “I second Oskar” like Esther did but fails* 😉
I second Oskar!
I nominate Sir Gavin from the Blood of Kings Trilogy. What would Achan have done without him? (I suppose he could count for the Wisest Counselor as well, but I’m here, so this is where I’ll nominate him LOL)
I second Sir Gavin! (Yeah, he might fit better in Wisest Counselor, but Sir Caleb might argue with that. XD And he’s certainly a good friend to Achan!)
I second Sir Gavin.
I second Sir Gavin!
I nominate Luke from Eight Days of Luke by Diana Wynne Jones.
(I NEED TO READ THAT BOOK.)
Pingback: The Silmarillion Awards – To be a Shennachie
I nominate Perrin Goldeneyes from Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. A hero in his own right, and one who faces astronomical challenges of his own, he still never fails to come to the aid of his friends. A true gentle giant.
I read all the comments and realized something: NO ONE NOMINATED SAM GAMGEE. THIS IS A TRAVESTY. *weeps in a corner* 😉 So I nominate him.
(That’s because we’re not nominating LOTR characters since they’re the standard in each category and will be giving the award. 😀 Otherwise we’d ALL be nominating Sam!! 😀 Don’t worry, he’s totally the standard for most faithful friend. XD)
*facepalm* I don’t know WHY I did that. xD I knew that we couldn’t nominate LOTR characters, but… augh, sorry. xD
Heehee, it’s okay — Sam DOES come to mind for most faithful friend and I keep thinking of LOTR characters to nominate, myself, and sometimes only stop myself barely before commenting, so you’re not alone. 😛

I tenth Reepicheep! What a mouse :).
I nominate Una from THE FAERIE QUEENE. Una is a sweet, lovely, meek and mild sidekick to the Redcrosse Knight. She also has a spine of chilled steel and the kind of wisdom that keeps him from falling prey to every passing enchantress. Redcrosse and Una’s relationship is so precious because he has brawn and she has brains, and when they get separated they’re about as much use apart as a pair of babies, but put them together and NO ONE can beat them.
<3
Oh, I second Una from The Faerie Queene!
I nominate Nugget the dog from the Wingfeather Saga! Sure, he’s just a dog, but he saves Leeli how many times?
I second Nugget! He is the best!
Nugget!!!! I second!
I, as well, second Nugget. 🙂
I second Horace from the Ranger’s Apprentice series; I second Rose Red from the Tales of Goldstone Wood series; I second Walter Foley from the Dragons in Our Midst, Oracles of Fire, and Children of the Bard series.
I nominate Adam from Knightley Academy by Violet Haberdasher. He’s such a funny and likeable chum, and a friend who sticks by Henry. (This book is TECHNICALLY alternate history; does it still count? It’s mostly classified as fantasy on Goodreads…)
I nominate Suzy Turquoise Blue from The Keys to the Kingdom series by Garth Nix. She’s always ready to delve into the thick of things, and has more than once helped Arthur when he’s in a jam.
I nominate Butler from the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer. A steadfast bodyguard, he’s fiercely loyal to Artemis–but he’s also not afraid to tell his client things straight-up.
That’s all I got for now! 😀
Oh, and I forgot to second Rose Red from the Tales of Goldstone Wood by Anne Elisabeth Stengl! Well, I did it now, so I’m good to go. 😛
If Knightley Academy counts, then I second Adam! 🙂
I nominate Nynaeve from Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. I am still finishing the last two books, and she is sticking close to Rand, helping in big, brave ways. If her faithfulness is compromised before the story ends, I apologize, and please don’t spoil it for me. 🙂
Hey DJ! I’m sure my nominee for “Best Friend” will seem obscure to your readers…..but I have come to know him quite well as I have read all (4) Books of the Minstrel’s Song Series. Kiernan Kane is many things….and simply my favorite literary character ever. He is certainly a mystery…..he is certainly powerful……not in the way that Thor is powerful…….not so limited in that way……….he is wise beyond all………he has lost more than anyone else……..he is The Great Friend to Mankind…………but most especially……..he is the best friend that Brant ever had………and it takes many, many years for Brant to discover what we (the reader) have observed all along. I could nominate Kiernan for many different categories and he would be equally qualified……..but the thing I LOVE most about Kiernan Kane…….is his Friendship to The Last High King……….Brant.
I second Kiernan Kane!
I nominate Madeline Hatter from Ever After High. 🙂
I second that!
