  5. An individual may not second their own nomination, but may second as many other nominations as they wish.
  6. Characters and creatures nominated must be from a work of fantasy fiction, but they cannot be from any of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work.

Award details

This is the page to vote on for the Most Magnificent Dragon award. Write your nominations or second someone else’s in the comments below.

Qualifications: The most magnificent dragon is the dragon who stands above and beyond not only puny mortals (that goes without saying), but is so awe-inspiring, so majestic, so terrifyingly imposing that he gives even other dragons pause. He may gain his superiority through magic, cunning, or his sheer massive strength or the size of his treasure horde. Mere lizards and pseudo-dragons need not apply. This award belongs only to full-blooded draconis magnificus!

The award will be presented by one whose armour is like tenfold shields, whose teeth are swords, whose claws spears, the shock of whose tail is a thunderbolt, his wings a hurricane, and his breath death!”

After nominating or endorsing one or more magnificent dragons below, be sure to visit the other award pages and nominate your the entries you deem most worthy for the following categories.

Least Competent Henchman

Most Mischievous Imp

Wisest Counselor
Most Faithful Friend

    1. I second the nomination of Grandion. His picture is awe-inspiring on the cover of Dragonfriend.

  4. I nominate the Jabberwocky from Alice in Wonderland (does that count…?)
And I also nominate Death-in-Life and Life-in-Death from The Tales of Goldstone Wood.

    1. Second the dragon Furious and nominate Toothless! (from the books, not the movies. Big difference)

  5. I nominate the Reluctant Dragon (from The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Graham)

    Second:

    -Saphira
    -Kazul
    -Meenore

  6. I nominate:

-Shardas from Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George–he collects stained glass windows, so that’s a pretty awesome horde. 🙂
-Abaddon from the Oracles of Fire series by Bryan Davis–his alliteration is so skillful I have to read his dialogue twice (once to appreciate the alliteration and a second time to realize what he actually said)
-all the kitten-sized dragons in the DragonKeeper Chronicles by Donita K. Paul

  7. I nominate Temeraire from Naomi Novik’s nine-book Temeraire series about dragons fighting the Napoleonic wars. Yes, you read that sentence correctly. There are a fantastic variety of breeds fighting for various nations, but England’s Temeraire, captained by William Laurence, is the one that gives all others pause, even those twice his size. A rare breed virtually never seen outside of China, where they are considered royalty, their Divine Wind breath weapon instinctively strikes fear in any dragon’s heart, can shatter whole battalions of troops and cannon, and by itself can turn the tide of a battle. Add to this Temeraire’s superior flying ability and extraordinary intellect – and the fact that the only thing he CAN’T do well is follow orders – and one can see why even his own adopted nation’s government fears that he may one day turn against them.

      1. I just heard about this series and am really itching to get my hands on it… definitely on my TBR!

One of the best things about this annual event is discovering/being reminded of all the amazing fantasy books I have yet to read!

  8. Since we aren’t limited to one, I’m going to second Yurgen from Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga. Can’t believe Temeraire and Yurgen haven’t been getting more respect around here!

    1. Seriously!! Yurgen was such an interesting character, and an especially great dragon. Not to mention that he lives in the ocean!

  9. Oooh, I second Cricket, Gnaw, and Grandios! And I nominate Kazul from The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede.

    1. Oops, I guess that was a second for Kazul. Dang, so many great dragons! lol. I’ll skip a formal nomination since it would seem rather self-serving to nominate one of my own dragons. 😉

  10. I’m nominating Gnag the Nameless from Andrew Peterson’s “The Wingfeather Saga”, because he *was* a dragon for a little while!
And also that anonymous forest dragon that wants to toast Migmar in Batson and Hopper’s “The Berinfell Prophecies: Venom and Song”. XD

  11. I also want to nominate…

-Miss Drake from A Dragon’s Guide to the Care and Feeding of Humans by Laurence Yep and Joanne Ryder
-Bridger from One Realm Beyond by Donita K. Paul
-Hartanna from the Dragons in Our Midst/Oracles of Fire series by Bryan Davis

(I could probably go on and on. I read a loooot of books with dragons in them, but I’m TRYING to not go overboard. xD)

  12. I nominate Exsis from Ilyon Chronicles by Jaye L. Knight! All the dragon-fighting maneuvers as well as keeping Kaden safe!

  13. I nominate Zdeanak from “Minstrel’s Song” Series.

I second Rhendak from that same Series

  14. I nominate Grackle from The Oracles of Fire by Bryan Davis. She may not have had a huge role in the story, but she was the inspiration for the name of one of my stuffed dragons so she ranks pretty highly. 😉

  15. I am ashamed I haven’t heard of so many of these. But I second Eustace and Darkstalker and the DragonKeeper Chronicle dragons.

And I nominate Glory from Wings of Fire.
    And Deathbringer (from same).
