Coming soon: The Silmarillion Awards
Well, this is awkward. You see, there’s this super big, super exciting virtual fantasy shindig I’ve been working on for weeks now, if not months. And I have uttered nary a peep about it. Because of my status as an international spy, I suppose. But I got to thinking, “is that really a good reason?” And I decided it wasn’t. Being a spy is rather ho-hum after all. Who needs it? Being an author is much more exciting.
So the silence officially ends now (well, mostly). Because for the first time in forever (cue music) it’s time to talk about the Silmarillion Awards! What is it? Only the snazziest, most fantastical online awards event ever! And the best part is, you get to play along at home!
Okay, let me back up. The Silmarillion Awards are all about celebrating fantasy fiction. But whereas most awards go to authors or books, these will be going to the characters themselves! Sound like fun? Read on.
I won’t go into all the details here (that will come on Monday), but there will be ten awards given in this, the inaugural edition of the Silmarillion Awards covering everything from weapons to poems to friendship.
Each award will be presented by a character from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. In case you’re not familiar with his work, The Silmarillion (I really need to post a review on that some day), the title comes from a set of gems called silmarils which were the most beautiful things crafted by the elves of the West. They were so beautiful that some of them went on to become celestial lights. Anyway, in honor of Tolkien’s work and role in establishing the fantasy genre, we decided that each award would be given by one of Tolkien’s characters. The recipients will be other characters from other fantasy books (basically anything not written by Tolkien.)
Silmarils from the vault
The silmarils won’t look like the ones pictured above. What will they look like? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see. Us authors, we’ve got connections. That’s all I’m saying on that one.
Each award will be given on one of the websites of the participants involved. So you’ll get to kibitz with other authors and bloggers as well as your fantasy friends. Nominations will occur in the comments for each award’s post. Then voting will happen two weeks later. And finally the awards will be announced between July 16-28 with a final, grand gala celebration July 29th in honor of the original publication date of Lord of the Rings!
That’s not every detail, but that’s the gist of it. The full details will be posted on Monday, June 20th. So check back soon!
And thus ends my brilliant, yet brief and entirely uneventful career as a spy. From now on I shall be imminently forthcoming, a spiller of guts, a font of information, a paragon of the press, a snitch among snitches…um, I think you get the point.
This should be a blast! Can’t wait until the awards finally get started!
