Quote: The Smartest Person in the Room

As a writer, I’m always trying to improve. That’s why I read, that’s why I listen to my editors (mostly), and interact with other writers. I saw this quote on the internet and thought it encapsulated some good advice.

It’s not just about “intelligence” though. It’s about growing in your chosen skill (for me, writing). Try to find people who will challenge you, who are better than you. Don’t just stick with what you’re good at. Try to find ways to hang out with people who are smarter or wiser or more experienced or in just someway better than you at what you do or want to be doing. There is wisdom in many counselors and in learning from those who have gone ahead of you.

Hope you enjoy this quote.

If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.

  1. Great quote! I read a blog post the other day about mentor characters and how they are always all-knowing when, instead, they should learn and grow just like any other character. This quote fits nicely with that thought, I think.

    1. Oh, good point. Hadn’t thought of it in the context of character development. I tend to like writing the “reluctant hero” or the “everyman” as protagonist so my characters usually get a healthy dose of “not being the smartest person in the room.” 🙂
