Lately I’ve been doing a lot of world-building lately. The funny thing about building an imaginary world, is that all you really have to draw from is the one you know. And so in parallel with fleshing out these places which only exist between my ears, I’ve been exploring more of my own.
This takes the form of camping, reading a book on medieval travel, or searching image galleries. Perhaps less obviously, it involves things like reading the bible, playing board games, and going for a walk. Because it’s in the downtime, in the simple act of living that the ideas often come.
Which brings me to this little quote I’d like to share.
We shall not cease from exploration. The end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time
-T.S. Eliot
So whether you’re a novelist, a world traveler, a stock boy, or a single mom, don’t cease exploring. Every day has some treasure to uncover, sometimes right in our very back yard. If only we have eyes to see it.Every day has some treasure to uncover, sometimes right in our very back yard. If only we have eyes to see it.
What is that book on medieval travel? Have you finished it? Is it pretty good?
Hey, Matthew. It’s called “The Medieval Traveller” by Ohler. I haven’t started it yet, but it was a little hard to find. Now that my copy finally came, I hope to start it soon as research for my upcoming series.
