writing in a rain storm quote by DJ Edwardson

Quote: Writing is like selling water

I love writing, but some days it’s pretty hard. Ok, most days. And this little metaphor kind of popped into my head recently. It’s one way to look at writing. Not the only way, but I’ll bet many of my fellow authors can relate.

Ever meet a guy selling water in a rain storm? Writing is kind of like that for most writers. There is a deluge of words out there.

But still we shoulder on. Because the elliptical truth is that writing is an act of faith that somehow, somewhere, someone is thirsty even amidst all that rain.

    That’s beautiful.

When you write something you know won’t appeal to the majority of readers – those who crave Romances or Thrillers – you are taking a leap of faith that somehow you will find your readers.

It’s lonely out there, but the reviews of those who love your book tell you, especially when the reviewer is very different from you, that the readers are there, and to keep searching for them.

There is a great deal of faith in writing. And silence. There is no guarantee that your work will take off. But you’re right, those few positive voices can sometimes provide the encouragement to keep going, even when there is no end to the storm in sight.
